Parliament reconvenes

Accra, May 16, GNA - Parliament on Tuesday reconvened after the Easter recess to begin the second session of the Fourth Parliament which would see the passage of various bills including the Domestic Violence Bill.

A report on the Whistle Blower Bill would be laid before the house on Wednesday to begin the process of passage by the house. The Speaker, Mr Ebenezer Sekyi Hughes who welcomed members back to the house, called for their cooperation and support to ensure that the business for the session was conducted with dispatch.

He informed the house of a notice from the Electoral Commission declaring Mr Fuseini Inusah, as the new Member of Parliament for Tamale South in the April 04 bye-election following the resignation of the incumbent, Professor Wayo Seini.

The Speaker then invited Mr Inusah to swear the oaths of Allegiance and Membership of the House.

Mr Alban Bagbin, Minority Leader, said it was appropriate to also welcome the new member adding, "we have captured our seat." He expressed the gratitude of the National Democratic Congress to all Ghanaians for contributing to the strengthening of the county's democracy following a peaceful election.

The Minority Leader used the occasion to touch on the recent reshuffle and urged former ministers who lost heir positions not to be discouraged.

He made reference to the retention of Majority Leader, Mr Felix Owusu Ansah, as the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, saying he had survived the reshuffle and it showed that President John Agyekum Kufuor had recognised the latter's contributions to the house. Mr Bagbin also touched on the new ministerial nominations and assured Ghanaians that Parliament would apply seriousness to the business of vetting the new entrants to ensure that "only good materials became ministers."

He urged his colleagues in the house to also attach seriousness to the business of the house since a number of important bills would be passed.

Mr Owusu-Adjapong also congratulated Mr Fuseini for emerging the winner and also commended Mr Peter Mac-Manu, NPP National Chairman, for contributing to a peaceful by-election in the Tamale South Constituency by not allowing his party to field a candidate.

He said the house would continue to work hard during this session and added that the leadership would be meeting soon to deliberate on matters pertaining to the welfare of members.

Earlier, the Speaker referred a list of new ministers to the Appointment Committee, after informing members of a communication from the President listing new ministers and deputies.

Mr Fuseini Inusah, later in an interview with the press, said he was honoured to be part of the house and said he would strive to give a voice to members of his constituency and ensure that they benefited from the national resources.
