Former WBO super-bantamweight world champion, Isaac Dogboe, has revealed that he felt the urge to leave the sport, which led to his decision to retire.

According to him, he had been pondering the decision for some time, questioning whether it was the right moment, but eventually chose to quit and focus on other aspects of his career.

Speaking in an interview with JoySports, Dogboe disclosed that he had received offers to fight but declined them, deciding instead to bow out of boxing despite his accomplishments.

“It’s been a tough decision to make. Every so often I’d say, ‘I think I’m going to call it,’ but then I’d wait, just to be sure I was making the right choice. Sometimes I’d get the itch when an offer came in, but I kept asking myself if I really wanted to take the fight. It kept happening, so I had to take time to think deeply before arriving at the decision,” he explained.

The former world champion stressed that he thought carefully about the decision and has no intention of coming out of retirement in the future, regardless of financial considerations.

“It took quite a while because I wanted to make sure that once I leave, I’m leaving for good. I didn’t want to fight only for money. For me, boxing was never about the money. I just wanted to ensure the right decision was made,” he added.

Dogboe leaves the sport with an impressive record of 24 wins and 4 losses, including 16 victories by knockout, having competed at the highest level and proudly carried the Ghanaian flag onto the world stage.

His greatest achievement came in 2018, when he etched his name into Ghanaian sporting history by defeating Jessie Magdaleno to become the WBO super-bantamweight world champion, a title he successfully defended.

His reign, however, faced its toughest test against Mexican fighter Emanuel Navarrete, to whom Dogboe lost his title before suffering defeat again in their rematch.
