Hasmal lift Goodnews trophy

SEKONDI Hasaacas lifted the Goodnews trophy last Sunday after coming from behind to beat city rivals Eleven Wise 2-1 in the maiden edition of a special cup match played at the Sekondi Gyandu Park.

The match, the first of its kind in four years, was organised by Goodnews FM, a new private radio station in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, to strengthen the relationship between the two teams.

The match was watched by a large crowed including the MP for Sekondi and Majority leader in Parliament, Paapa Owusu Ankamah, and the Chief Executive of Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly, Mr Philip Nkrumah.

It was the underdogs. Wise, who after playing some delightful footall deservedly took the lead in the 12th minute through Daniel Acquaye, whose header just behind the 18-yard box zoomed straight into the net.

With their ego boosted by the goal and their fans cheering them on, Wise outplayed their opponents, forcing the fans of Hasaacas to stop drumming and sit bemused, till the end of the first half.

Hasaacas, with their pride at stake, resumed the second half, on a more determined note pilling incessant pressure on their opponents. They deservedly pulled-even in the 61st minute through skipper Kingsley Kwarteng.

Hasaacas sustained the pressure and went ahead in the 66th minute through John Ainoo. Wise redoubled their efforts afterwards and came close to scoring on a few occasions, but wasted the opportunities that came their way.

And when a 30-metre left-footed free-kick in the 85th minute rocked the goal post, it became clear that Wise had surrendered once again to their city rivals. In the curtain raiser, Twin City Radio came from two goals down to beat Goodnews FM 3-2 in an entertaining match.

After the match, the metropolitan, Chief Executive of S. A.E.M.A, Mr Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, presented the trophy to skipper Kingsley Kwarteng of Hasaacas amidst cheers from his colleagues and supporters.

Saliu Muntari who was voted the Player of the Season for Hasaacas also received an Nsawam foam mattress as his prize.

The Dedication and valour award went to Atta Yawson, who received a 20-inch colour TV. Youngster Anthony Annan, playing his first premiership season, won the most Promising Star Award. He received a radio cassette recorder as his prize.
