Goldfields keeper goes AWOL

BLACK STARS and Obuasi Goldfields keeper Constant Mantey, has headed for the USA after suffering numerous contractual problems with Goldfields.
Mantey has absconded from Obuasi, and is believed to be in the United States in search of greener pastures, after contractual disputes over the number of years he signed to play for the club. The representative of the club, Mr Akwasi Owuahene Acheampong said the dispute started when the player claimed that he signed a year's contract and not three as claimed by the club.
Mantey was signed from Asante Kotoko for a transfer of $US9,000 and swapped with Lawrence Adjei who attracted the same value. He was also given $US5,000 enticement fee.
Mr Acheampong said the team was surprised to find that all documents on the transfer, including the "Card A" which states that any tampering renders it invalid, has some scribbling on it. He also produced the initial contract they signed with the player stating that he has agreed to stay with Goldfields from the 1999/2000 season, and not for the 1999/2000 season, meaning the contract is for one year.
"When one looks at the documents he is basing his demands on, one would clearly see that even the signature of the late Mr Kojo Nunoo, who was the chief executive then was falsified, and we are investigating to find the insider who was involved," said Acheampong. On their next course of action, Mr Acheampong said they are in the process of formally reporting the issue to the Ghana Football Association for the necessary actions.
