Glo/CAF Awards Moved to Accra

The Glo-CAF Awards Ceremony to determine the continent?s best players for the outgoing year is to hold January 18 at the International Conference Centre in Accra, Ghana. Widely touted to hold in Nigeria for the second time since Globacom took over the sponsorship of the event, yesterday?s disclosure that the Ghanaian capital would play host to the cream of African football is likely to jolt followers of the game here, who were anxiously waiting to see their idols parade the red carpet.

It was learnt that in line with the spirit of rotation and fair play, organisers decided to take the ceremony to Accra and as expected, Ghanaians, who have their own international, Michael Essien, in the hunt for the prized Player of the Year award, are happy that they would have the chance to be part of history when the best players are named.

An official of Globacom, Harry Iwuala, said that the telecommunications firm was going to pull all stunts to ensure the assemblage of all nominees at the venue.

Unlike at the last awards held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, where Samuel Eto?o Fils, was the only player out of the four nominees for the Player of the Year, who turned up, Iwuala said private jets would be stationed anywhere the fantastic four are to fly them to Accra for the event.

Iwuala said in line with Globacom?s drive to support and develop African football that the ceremony would be the best thing ever, promising that the ceremony would be spiced with razzmatazz and pomp.

?We are planning a stunner, a show that would hold everyone spellbound, a truly African spectacle that will showcase the best that this continent has to offer the world. We are going to surpass the achievements of past events because we have what it takes to make this ceremony a masterpiece?, said Iwuala. Among the awards up for grabs is the hotly coveted African Player of the Year diadem, which is being jostled for by reigning champion, Barcelona and Indomitable Lions? forward, Samuel Eto?o Fils, Chelsea and Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba, Portsmouth and Super Eagles forward, Nwankwo Kanu and Michael Essien.

Three of the four nominees play professional football in England and it is widely expected, going by performances, that the winner would come from the Premiership.

One player that looks good to claim the title for the first time in his career is Drogba, captain of the Ivorian side that finished second best at the last Nations Cup in Egypt. Drogba was an eyeful at the Nations Cup, where he inspired his team to beat two former champions, Cameroon and Nigeria, en route reaching the final, which they lost on penalties.

While the likes of Eto?o failed to light up the scene at the Nations Cup and Essien was missing as the Black Stars crashed out in the first round, Drogba?s one-man show with a young Ivorian side, certainly puts him in good stead to get the crown. Add his fantastic showing for two-times Premiership champions, Chelsea and his cool demeanour, then the coast appears set for Drogba to reign supreme in night skies of Accra.
