Former Chelsea and France defender Marcel Desailly is unhappy with the choices of Ghanaian players abroad.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Accra, the 47-year-old moved to France at the age of four, and since went on to represent the European nation at various international tournaments.

“They [Ghanaian players abroad] don’t play abroad; they are second choices, third choices just because the focus and the interest is [on] the money from the beginning, instead of building up knowledge and having a capacity," Desailly told 3FM.

"It’s not so bad; we just have to structure it well.

“We have too many players abroad. We have legitimate ones and top ones.

"I wish [Christian] Atsu, who has a great ability and capacity, could at least play in his club. He has been moving around from Chelsea to Everton and now Malaga. I don’t know how well he’s doing there but I need him to be good. I believe in him. I believe in his capacity.

"Many others are stable in their club like [Andre] Andre, like Jordan [Ayew] and it gives them experience of the high level.

"We need a lot more others to get involved at the high level of the game.”

Desailly won the 1998 Fifa World Cup, the 2000 Uefa European championship and the 2001 and 2003 Fifa Confederations Cups with Les Bleus, having also lifted the Uefa Champions League with Marseille and AC Milan.

Since his retirement from active football, he has expressed his desire to coach the Black Stars in the future.
