Ghana needs determined players, not top coach - Barnes

Former England and Liverpool striker John Barnes claims the appointment of an experienced expatriate trainer as head coach of the Black Stars will not guarantee Ghana its first World Cup trophy at the Russia 2018 tournament, unless players with the right level of mental fortitude and commitment are selected into the senior national team.

“Well it’s not necessary to talk about the caliber of the coach.” “What we have to do is we have to change the mindset.”

“Pele spoke about African players having the capability to win the World Cup. Ghana can, but they must improve so we can look at the good coaches but we must get players, who have the right determination, discipline, desire,” Barnes said.

Following the dismissal of Kwesi Appiah, most pundits have been keenly monitoring the FA’s screening of applicants for the vacant Black Stars coaching job since there is a belief that the senior national team would need a top quality tactician to end Ghana’s 32-year wait for a trophy at senior level.
