Ghana, Two Others bid for Nations Cup 2008

Libya, Ghana and South Africa are the three countries who will fight it out for the chance to host the 2008 African Nations Cup finals. Libya and South Africa are also currently involved in the tussle for the right to host the first ever World Cup in Africa in 2010.

The trio were the only countries to submit their bids before the deadline at the end of last month, ending speculation over bids from Algeria, Angola and Namibia as well.

Libya, Ghana and South Africa have all previously hosted the bi-annual continental championships.

Ghana were hosts in 1963 and 1978 and again in 2000, when they co-hosted the event with Nigeria at late notice after it was taken away from an ill-prepared Zimbabwe.

South Africa stepped in to take over as hosts in 1996 from Kenya, and Libya were hosts in 1982 when the final was played on artificial turf at Tripoli.

Caf?s executive committee will decide next year who will host the 2008 event.

That decision is expected to come in June after the Fifa executive decides who will host the 2010 World Cup

Tunisia is the venue for next January?s Nations Cup while the 2006 finals will be played in Egypt.

Caf has also announced that Egypt will host next year?s African futsal championships, while South Africa will host the African women?s championships again.

The 2007 African youth championships has been given to Congo. The 2005 event has already been set down for Guinea.
