GHALCA to renegotiate deal with Kinapharma next year

Accra, Oct. 9, GNA - The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has stated their intention to renegotiate the current league sponsorship deal between Kinapharma and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) should their plans of running the league from next season materialises. In an interview with the GNA Sport in Accra on Thursday, Mr Kudjoe Fianoo, Administrative Manager of GHALCA said the new renegotiation would be done with the clubs in mind since the present one guarantees them virtually nothing.

He expressed the hope that Kinapharma would understand their position and increase the sponsorship package in order to solve some of the financial burdens hanging on the necks of the club chairmen.

Mr Fianoo said the current deal, which is worth 1. 5 billion cedis in cash and product of the company does not in any way measure up at to what Kinapharma is getting back in terms of air time and exposure which has been estimated to be in the region of six billion cedis.

"The current deal as it stands now is not feasible and the clubs are not benefiting from it to enable them develop the game at the grassroots."

He said even though they admit that the present league is not the best and could be improved upon; it is worth more than the value being paid for by the pharmaceutical giants.

"From now onwards what we intend doing is to package the league in such a way to make it attractive to prospective sponsors both local and foreign to sink in their money with the view of getting something in turn."

Kinapharma signed a five years deal with the GFA, the custodians of the league at the start of the season as the sole sponsors. The amount involved for the first year is 1.5 billion cedis in cash and products of the company. This is to be reviewed upwards every year.

GHALCA, an association formed by league clubs to seek their welfare, recently announced their intention to take over the running of the league from next season as it pertains in other football countries. The association in furtherance of this objective sent its executives to South Africa to study the model used by their sister association in that country with the view of modifying it to suit the Ghanaian experience.

But before GHALCA would be given the chance to run the league, the GFA would have to amend their constitution at its next general congress.
