Emmanuel Frimpong says he has been punished for being racially abused after he was sent off for raising his middle finger at fans in FC Ufa's match against Spartak Moscow.

In his side's first game of the season in the Russian Premier League, the 23-year-old midfielder was the subject of jeers from the home fans and was sent off for his reaction.

The former Arsenal player took to Twitter to apologise for his reaction, but pointed out that African countries will receive the same treatment during the 2018 World Cup, which will be held in Russia.

"First off, want to apologize for the sending off after being provoked," he tweeted. "Shouldn't have happened but also I am a human being and shouldn't be racially abused for the game that I love.

"I'm going to serve a sentence for being abused and yet we going to hold a World Cup in this country where Africans will have to come play football."
