Five new stadias to be built

GHANA is to embark on a massive infrastructural development that would lead to the construction of at least five new stadia in the country.

When put into action it will put Ghana in a position to host major international sporting competitions, including the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Edward Osei Kwaku, made the disclosure yesterday when he jointly inaugurated the National Sports Council?s monthly Meet the Press series as well as the planning committee for next year?s Sports Fair in Accra.

The ceremony brought together officials of the various associations under the Sports Council?s umbrella, Ministry officials and other movers and shakers of Ghana sports.

Mr Osei Kwaku admitted that the absence of modern infrastructure in the country is the single biggest factor behind Ghana?s poor performance in international sports. Also, the chunk of the ministry?s budgetary allocation ? ?23 billion for 2002 ? goes into emoluments and service activities, thereby leaving very little money for development activities.

During yesterday?s ceremony the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Joe Aggrey, presented to the minister the reports of a committee on Sports Development that was set up to diagnose the cause of Ghana?s decline in international sports and then prescribe solutions to address the problems.

Mr Osei Kwaku also unveiled the logo for the Sports Fair which would offer local manufacturers of sports equipment to showcase their products. It will take place in Accra on March 1, 2003.

The minister reiterated his commitment to ensure that the existing sports infratructure are upgraded while new structures are constructed throughout the country.

The 2008 Nations Cup is the platform on which Ghana hopes to spread sporting infrastructure across the country. Should Ghana?s bid be accepted, the government will be compelled to build at least five new multi-purpose stadia in Sekondi, Sunyani, Tamale, Koforidua and Ho.

There is even the possibility of Cape Coast and Bolgatanga also getting a new stadium each, the Minister said.
