WHO IS DIDIER? – A Brief Bio

Although born in the Ivory Coast, Didier Drogba spent much of his youth in France living with his uncle, Michel Goba, a former professional soccer player.

Tito -- Drogba's nickname -- began his career as a striker in 1998, signing on to play with the second-division Le Mans. Unfortunately, his first three years with the club were plagued by bad luck and a number of injuries.

Nonetheless, his promise earned him a call from the French first-division club Guingamp, and he impressed them in 2002, with three goals in 11 appearances. Tito built on that success the following season with a total of 17 goals.

Drogba's eye-opening performance during the 2002-03 season netted him a contract with the French powerhouse Marseilles, where he scored a blistering 19 goals and earned the French Ligue 1 Player of the Season honors.

Clearly enamored with what they saw, Chelsea proceeded to snatch Tito up for the princely sum of £24 million (roughly US $43 million). Despite the hefty price tag, it proved to be a wise investment as Tito scored 10 goals en route to helping Chelsea capture the Premier League and Carling Cup championships. In addition to his outstanding professional career, Tito has also scored 21 goals in 27 caps.
