Essien in buoyant mood

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is confident Ghana can overcome USA and reach the knockout stages of the World Cup finals.

The African nation's first taste of World Cup action ended in disappointment, as they were given a footballing lesson by Italy.

It was felt that they would receive a second hiding when taking on Czech Republic, but Ghana shocked the footballing world when claiming a 2-0 win.

And victory over the States would see Ghana safely through to the knockout stages of the summer spectacular.

Bruce Arena's USA are not without hope, but Essien is confident of a Ghana victory.

"We will go for a win against the US team," Essien said. "And our chances are good I think."

A victory could set up a second round meeting with Brazil and Essien says they would approach the game with no fear.

"It would be hard, but we are prepared for it," Essien said. "We're not afraid to meet the Brazilians. We are ready to play anyone.

"First we have to deal with the USA. They play good football and they will be tough."
