Ebenezer Assifuah progresses in Swiss Cup

Ebenezer Assifuah came on for the dying moments as Sion overcame FC Zurich 1-0 in the Swiss Cup semi-final.

In victory, Sion have secured a place in the Swiss Cup final where they will play the winner of FC St. Gallen and FC Basel, who meet on Wednesday evening.

Didier Tholot’s side have been in fine form in the knock-out competition so far this season, and will be confident of claiming their 13th Swiss Cup. To date, the club have never lost a domestic cup final and will be hoping not to end this run in this year’s showpiece.

Zurich became Sion’s latest victims on Tuesday, with the club having previously eliminated FC Aarau, FC Koniz and FC Biel-Bienne among others from this season’s competition.

Senegal striker Moussa Konate scored the only goal of the game, on 48 minutes, to settle the tie after profiting from a Reto Ziegler free kick.

The forward is enjoying a fine run of form, and will be a familiar face to Ghana fans. It was Konate who scored a brace during the international break as the Lions of Teranga beat the Black Stars in Le Havre.

Assifuah made his entrance in the 90th minute, replacing the goalscorer.

The Ghanaian striker was also present in Le Havre as the two West African giants met in March. However, the Swiss-based forward was, along with Seidu Salifu, the only outfield player not to feature during the Black Stars’ recent friendlies.

Despite his non-appearance, it is clear that Assifuah has a place in Avram Grant’s plans. He was also called-up for the preliminary squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, but was ultimately cut from the final squad.

21-year-old Assifuah featured for Sekondi Eleven Wise and Liberty Professionals in his homeland before making his move to Switzerland, and to the Super League, in 2013.

He was a prolific figure for Ghana’s U20 side, but is yet to make his senior debut.
