Drogba tipped to win Best Footballer award

Ivory Coast captain, Didier Drogba has been highly tipped to win the Confederation of African Football and Globacom African player of the year award for the third time at Thursday night’s expected lavish ceremony in Accra.

Drogba faces challenges from compatriot Yaya Toure who powered Manchester City to their first English Premier League title in over four decades in the year under review as well as the Cameroonian, Alexandre Song who began the year playing for Arsenal in England but is now a player of Spanish giants, FC Barcelona. A survey conducted by yours truly in the Ghanaian capital host of the high level awards, has indicated that Drogba is the estimated leading candidate. Many people have tipped the Elephants’ skipper who converted the last and winning penalty with his last kick for Chelsea to win the European Champions’ League trophy for the first time ever back in May, before switching to Chinese side, Shanghai Shenhua.

Drogba who beat Ghana's Michael Essien to win his first Glo CAF Footballer of the year award for 2006, the first time the awards ceremony came to Ghana in March 2007, is not only a favourite because of his UEFA Champion’s League heroics, but he also led his country to the finals of the African Nations’ Cup only to lose to Zambia.

And with the highly favoured Zambian captain, Chris Katongo not among the top three, Didier stands taller and mightier to grab the award.

Although Ghana is not in contention for the topmost award, the golden Black Maidens stand the chance of winning an award in the female category for the bronze medal winning feat at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Some top football dignitaries have arrived in the country for the Awards Ceremony and with the promise by entertaining performers to put up a great show, all roads lead to the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra Thursday December 20 night.

But attendance is strictly by invitation and all football fans who do not have the special invitation must stay away and get the news from www.sportsinghana.com, the authentic source of news on Ghanaian sports and African Stars.
