Do not consider race in choosing coach for the Stars

Kumasi, June 11, GNA - A former coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, Anthony Adusei has implored the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to be very circumspect about their choice of a coach to handle the affairs of the team.

He said it was imperative that the football authorities engage the services of a coach who has the technical ability, experience, expertise and capacity to deliver and not necessarily by considering one's colour or origin.

Coach Adusei in an interview with the GNA Sports in Kumasi on Wednesday, kicked against the notion among some soccer fans that local coaches were not competent enough to steer the affairs of the senior national team.

This, he said, was a disincentive to developing the skills of local coaches since such attitude and perception dampens the spirit and ability of the coaches to perform creditably when given the job. "After all the best records achieved by the Black Stars over the years were masterminded by local coaches and they should therefore not in anyway be sidelined when selecting a coach for the team", he told the current form by stepping up their training to enable them qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations to be held in South Africa and Angola, respectively.

Coach Adusei further stressed the need to motivate local players to facilitate their integration into the senior team adding that this was crucial to ensure that the players do not seek greener pastures abroad under frustrating conditions.

He commended the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for introducing the African Nations Championship, noting that the move would help to develop the talents and skills of local players on the African Continent for the benefit of the game and local clubs. 11 June 08
