Corners beat Hearts 2-1

Corners Under 19 soccer team played above themselves on the second day of the maiden Mylik Classics Tournament and registered a favourable 2-1 score line against Accra Hearts of Oak Youth Team at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday.

The Phobians scored first when Henry Commodore converted a penalty mid way through the first half after Emmanuel Addo was upended in the box by a Corners defender.

Corners Babies reacted swiftly and drew level nine minutes later when Mohammed Issaka spiked home a free kick from the edge of the Hearts penalty area.

The Kumasi lads could have gone ahead soon after that but sleek playing Ibrahim Adam snapped a bicycle kick against the right upright to keep the scores even at the end of the first half.

Hearts seized the initiative early in the second half and pushed the visitors back for a brief spell but failed to gain the needed advantage as Corners defenders Mohammed Issaka, Isaac Appiah and Thomas Mensah neutralised the forward charges of Commodore, Dan Adoquaye and Emmanuel Addo.

With about six minutes remaining, Dominic Adiya punished Hearts for a defensive lapse when he sneaked behind the defenders to score the match winner.

The Phobians now have to win their remaining matches against Kpando Hearts of Lions and British Council CSP to qualify for the semi final stages.

Hearts of Lions spanked British Council CSP by 7-2 in the first match of the day

On the whole, the standard of play was very high and officiating has been excellent.

The competition continues on Friday with Kumasi Asante Kotoko playing Intermillas, while Sam Arday's Feyenoord take on F/C Midjtlland in the second match.

Hearts of Oak will play Hearts of Lions on Saturday in the first match and Corners will duel British Council in the second match.
