Beginning from next year, CAF would be changing the league format of the champions’ league by introducing a semi final stage to the competition.

According to Dr. Viken Djizmedjan, Director of in charge of public and media relations for CAF, the league format where two teams go straight to the finals after qualifying from their groups would be changed with teams going into the semi final stage before the grand finale. He disclosed that as from next year, the winner of the Champions league would be receiving $1million with the 1st runner up taking $700,000.

CAF is also expected to sign a $50million TV right and marketing deal with French company Groupe Jean-Claude Darmon next year. The new deal, which replaces the existing agreement, secures rights to the next four African Nations Cup and CAF club competitions until 2008.

The deal is expected to be signed in Accra during the African Club Super Cup championship between Hearts of Oak and Zamalek on the 11th February 2001.

Dr. Viken touched on the $25,000 fee being demanded by CAF from all clubs participating in next years competitions organised by CAF as a deposit and not a charge by CAF. He said that the monies would be used to send the per diem, transportation and allowances to referees and match commissioners since national associations were always late in sending tickets to match officials.

According to Dr. Viken, CAF has taken over this responsibility and would be sending tickets to match officials ahead of time and this will enhance the organization of matches.
