Captaincy in Stars’, FA to make hierarchy known

Barely a week after Finder Sports broke the news of Ghana International Rahim Ayew’s call for the technical handlers of the Black Stars to hand the captains armband to his brother Dede Ayew, the president of the FA Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi says the issue will be laid to rest with a formal statement from the FA’s outfit.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Sports Link show last Saturday, the FA capo said John Mensah remained the captain of the Black Stars but they were going to formally come out on the captaincy issue clearly with a statement.

“We shall come out with a statement on who is the captain, who his assistant is and the order of leadership in the Black Stars” he said.

He was however not enthused about the fact about the controversy sorounding the captaincy issue, especially when there is a substantive captain, saying “these things bring disunity in the team”.

Mr Nyantakyi who himself admitted in an interview earlier that there has been a leadership vacuum in the stars since ex-captain Stephen Appiah retired stood by his assertion but refused to draw comparisons, adding that people come with their own traits and styles of leadership.

“John (Mensah) himself was a witness to what happened in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon where players we undermining each other,” he added.

He insisted that the criteria for the selection of leadership to the captaincy position was clear enough while admitting that long service and loyalty were key elements.

“In other jurisdictions, the FA selects but in Ghana it is the prerogative of the coach but in consultation of the FA,” he explained.
