Blackburn also backs out of Appiah chase

Blackburn Rovers have become the latest English club to back off a move for Ghana captain Stephen Appiah over fears about the player's wages.

Rovers boss Paul Ince admits he is an admirer of Appiah, who is now a free agent, but like Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp says he will not be making a move because the club simply cannot afford the wages.

"It is a transitional period for us," he said. "We don't have the resources that other teams have.

"Players like Appiah might be free agents, but they still want wages of around 60,000 a week.

"I've known about him since he was at Juventus a few years ago, but players like that ask for the world and we just can't compete."

The Ghana captain is looking for a new club after making a comeback from a 10-month lay off following a knee injury. Relevant Links
