Birmingham Signs Goalkeeper Kingson

GHANA international Richard Kingson was expected at Blues today to finalise a free transfer from Hammarby.

The 29-year-old has been targeted by boss Steve Bruce to increase competition at the club.

Kingson, who impressed during the World Cup in Germany for the Black Stars, has cut short his stay at the Swedish outfit, days before their Intertoto Cup first-round second-leg tie against KI Klaksvik, of the Faroe Islands.

Kingson joined Hammarby on loan initially from Turkish side Antalyaspor, following an 11-year spell in the country.

He was cover for injured first choice Erland Hellstrom but performed so well deputising that he attracted the attention of several clubs, including Blues.

Goalkeeper coach Nigel Spink and chief scout Bernard Paintin saw Kingson keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Djurgardens recently.

Kingson, who has also played for Galatasaray, has generally been regarded as a back-up goalkeeper throughout his career.

The keeper, whose brother Laryea plays for Hearts, will fight with Maik Taylor and Colin Doyle to be Steve Bruce's first choice in the new season.

There will be no work permit problems for Blues as Kingson, who is approaching 50 caps, holds dual Turkish nationality.

Kingson joins fellow Ghanaians Michael Essien, John Paintsil and Sulley Muntari in the Premiership this season, although the goalkeeper is likely to play fewer first-team games than his high-profile countrymen

There is some confusion regarding the spelling of his name. The Ghanaian FA said it is KingsTon, but the player has since revealed it is Kingson.

Kingston delighted with Birmingham move

Richard Kingston says his "dream has come true" following his move to Birmingham City.

"Everyone loved me and I was happy here, but my dream has now come true," Kingston told Hammarby's website.

"I have snubbed two offers, one from Denmark and one from Israel as I wanted to stay but England has always been my dream."
