Attuquayefio Is New Benin National Coach

Liberty Professionals coach Jones Attuquayefio has been confirmed as the new coach of the Benin national team. Attuquayefio adjudged Africa’s best coach in 2000 replaces Belgian Rene Taelman, whose contract was not renewed last month after Benin lost 3-0 away against the Sudan in an African Nations Cup qualifier.

Attuquayefio has been given a short-term contract for the remaining Group Three qualifiers against Sudan and Zambia at home and away to Tanzania. The west Africans have four points from their first three games and are third in the standings.

Attuquayefio is a former the senior national team the Black Stars and was at the helm when Accra's Hearts of Oak won the African Champions League in 2000. As a player he appeared in three successive finals of the African Nations Cup tournament with Ghana, winning in 1965 and being on the losing side in 1968 and 1970.
