Ajax Cape Town defender Lawrence Lartey has backed his former club Ashantigold to successfully defend the Ghana Premier League title in the new season scheduled to kick off on February 20.

The Miners, after winning their first league title in 2015 in almost two decades, saw several key players including top scorer Yakubu Mohammed, Bernard Morrison, Didier Kore and Lartey depart the country for greener pastures.

“I know how Ashantigold is run and I'm very certain that they have what it takes to retain the league title,” Lartey told Ghanasoccernet.

“I admit that some players have left including myself, but I also know very well that the team is still capable of executing the job without us.”

“I keep monitoring their performance from wherever I'm and I wish them all the best,” he added.

Ashantigold will combine local league with continental football as they represent Ghana in the Caf Champions League.

They will host Algerian side MO Bejaia on February 14 in the first leg with the return encounter expected in a fortnight later.
