Alhaji Hearts vows to clear name

Accra Hearts of Oak board member Alhaji Suleiman 'Hearts' Braimah has vowed to clear his name after being accused of money laundering.

The well-liked football administrator was granted bail on Wednesday by an Accra Circuit Court after being held along with his friend Alhaji Ahmed Tijani and Claribel Ewurasi Kinsful, a cabin crew member of Ghana International Airlines.

Claribel was charged with concealment of 59,870 pounds sterling on a random search on arrival from the UK but she claims the money was given to her by one George to be delivered to someone in Accra.

She was arrested in Accra after a random search by BNI operatives and Alhaji Hearts and Tijani went to the BNI headquarters to claim ownership of the money as the ones to receive the cash send by George.

The trio was charged in court but Hearts board member says he is innocent of any crime and will fight to clear his good name.

"I have lived in this country for several years and I don't have any record for any bad deeds and wouldn't do anything bad at this age to blemish my good reputation," Alhaji Hearts told Ghanasoccernet.

"As a man sometimes in your life things like this happen but I am we will take it as a test from God.

"I have never been a criminal and will never be. If I think I did something wrong or criminal I will not even go to the BNI to receive this embarrassment.

"Discussing this in detail while the issue is in court is a contempt of court but I am sure the final ruling will clear my name."

The football administrator rubbished reports he had ordered the money to be brought to the country to fund a political party.

"These thoughts and comments from people are totally out of place. I have never supported or funded a political party and never will," Alhaji Hearts said.

"I have only concentrated on my business here in Ghana and supporting Hearts of Oak. Please tell them to leave me out of politics.

"My family, Hearts fans, the football fraternity in Ghana and abroad as well as my friends are worried about the political twist to the story but I want to assured them that I will do everything to clear my name."

The trio pleaded not guilty to the accusations.

Admitting them to bail, the court, presided over by Mr Nathaniel Osam ordered them to report to the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) every Monday.

Mr Kwame Akuffo, one of the defence counsel, prayed the court to admit the accused persons to bail since the money in issue was in the custody of the state.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr George Abavelim told court that though investigations were ongoing, he would not object to the court's decision to grant the accused persons bail.

The court obliged and ordered them to reappear on September 10.
