Akwesi Appiah deserves contract extension - Randy Abbey

Ghana FA Executive Committee member Randy Abbey believes coach Akwasi Appiah deserves a contract extension regardless of how the Black Stars perform at the World Cup.

The Black Stars will be making a third successive appearance at the mundial haven breezed through qualification in impressive fashion.

Under Akwesi Appiah, the Black Stars have thrilled with a more attacking style and scoring a lot of goals – a far cry of the situation when the team was under the guidance of expatriates.

There are however some who believe Akwasi Appiah is not much of an astute technical brain to lead Ghana beyond the World Cup.

But Abbey who worked with the ex-Ghana captain in winning gold at the All Africa Games with the Black Meteors in 2011 is adamant Appiah must be tied down with a fresh contract with his existing deal set to expire at the end of the World Cup.

“He was tasked to qualify us to the World Cup and for me he has done it,” he said on GTV’s Stage Africa.

“In the past other coaches have used Ghana as a stepping stone to greater things after the World Cup and so we have to learn from that and tie Kwesi Appiah to a new contract.

“It helps his confidence and that of his players. I don’t think whatever happens at the World Cup should determine if he deserves another contract.”

Akwasi Appiah was made coach of Ghana to replace Goran Stevanovic following a disappointing finish at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The former Asante Kotoko captain signed a two-year deal which is set to expire at the end of the World Cup in Brazil.
