Akonnor Out With Knee Injury

Ghana defender Charles Akonnor requires surgery to repair a serious knee injury and will miss Wolfsburg’s upcoming matches against Bayern Munich, Schalke and Leverkusen. He is also expected to miss the African Nations Cup in January.

Akonnor is expected to have to hand over his captain’s armband to defender Samuel Kuffour until his return to the national side.

The 27-year-old was signed to Wolfsburg in 1998 as a replacement in the defensive midfield for American Claudio Reyna. Before signing for the Wolves, he was highly sought after by several English clubs after he made his mark in Germany at Fortuna Cologne.

He has 6 caps for Ghana and has scored just two international goals. During his time at Wolfsburg, he has played in 98 games and has scored 15 goals.
The injury comes at a bad time for the Wolves as they have seen a turnaround in their early season poor form and have battled their way out of the drop zone to take a respectable 10th place in the German top flight.
