African World Cup Play-offs Round Up

With the qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup done and dusted www.sports24gh.com takes you through the microscope as far as Africa is concern. Nigeria 2-0 Ethiopia (Aggregate: 4-1)

The Super Eagles of Nigeria became the first team to qualify from Africa for next summer’s greatest football fiesta when they humbled Ethiopia by 2:0 in Kalabar to give them a 4-1 aggregate.

The Nigerians had won the first leg by 2:1 and a draw could have taking them to the ‘Home of Football’, Brazil but goals from their two Victors (Victor Moses and Victor Obinna Nsofor) gave the Super Eagles the necessary victory. Senegal 1-1 Ivory Coast (Aggregate: 2-4)

An added time goal from Solomon Kalou ensured that African football ‘Prostitutes’, Ivory Coast who always dazzles in qualification and fails when it matters most book their third qualification to the FIFA World Cup.

The Lions of Terenga went into the match hungrier as they had lost the first leg by 1-3 and needed to win by at least two unanswered goals.

It took substitute Moussa Sow to open the score for Senegal in the second half.

Now needing only a goal to punch their ticket to Brazil, Solomon Kalou caught them on the break in time added on to score for the Elephant of la Cote d’Ivoire.

Cameroon 4-1 Tunisia (Aggregate: 4-1)

Tunisia who had given Cameroon a-chase-of-the-Lion in the first leg where completely walked over by the West African side in the second leg.

It took only five minutes for Pierre Webo to open the flood gate for Cameroon.

Benjamin Moudandjo made it two before the half time break. In the second half however, Jean Makoun scored twice whiles Ahmed Akaichi pulled one for Tunisia. Egypt 2-1 Ghana (Aggregate 3-7)

Ghana haven’t white washed the Pharaohs in the first leg by 6-1 where one foot in Brazil as it would have taken nothing but an unknown magic to prevent the Black Stars to go to Brazil.

Nonetheless the Egyptians believed they could surprise their Ghanaian counterpart. Amr Zakhi scored the opener in the first half from Aboutrika’s free kick.

Substitute Mohammed Gedo scored the second goal for the Pharaohs in the 84th minutes but their joy was short-lived as returnee, Kevin Prince Boateng converted Asamoah Gyan’s cross into the net in the 89th minute.

Algeria 1-0 Burkina Faso (Aggregate: 3-3)

Algeria became the last and the only team outside West Africa to book a ticket to Brazil.

Defender Bougherra scored the only goal in the 47th minute from a goal mouth scramble when Bakare Kone tried to clear his lines.
