North African clubs run rampant at CAF Cup

Johannesburg - Leading North African clubs Raja Casablanca of Morocco and Club Africain of Tunisia struck six goals each as they stormed into the CAF Cup quarterfinals this weekend.

Raja outplayed FC 105 of Gabon 6-1 in Casablanca to advance 7-3 on aggregate and Club Africain trounced Jeunesse Club Abidjan of Ivory Coast 6-0 in Tunis for a 6-2 overall second round triumph.

The Moroccan Green Devils were five goals ahead before Onanca Martial scored for the Libreville club in the 62nd minute and Ahmed Atlassi completed the rout with two minutes left.

Liberian Prince Daye led the Club Africain goal charge with two and Rehouma Mouelhi, Ettayeb Ben Salem, Radhouene Bouzaiene and Eamzi Fathalli also scored in a merciless response to a shock first leg defeat by the African rookies.

Joining them in the July 10 draw will be title holders Jeunesse Sportive Kabylie of Algeria, Al-Ahly of Egypt, Enugu Rangers of Nigeria, Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon, Green Buffaloes of Zambia and Black Rhinos of Zimbabwe.

Kabylie were surprisingly held 0-0 by Senegalese visitors Sonacos in Tizi-Ouzou, but squeezed through on the away-goal rule having drawn 1-1 in Dakar two weeks ago.

An early goal from Mohammed Fadl and another midway through the second half by Adel Moustafa gave Al-Ahly a 2-0 victory over Al-Nasr of Libya in Cairo. The Egyptian Red Devils led 2-1 from the first encounter.

Enugu had to survive a late onslaught from Daring Club Motema Pembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa with the West Africans losing the match 1-0, but winning the tie thanks to a 2-0 victory at home.

Cotonsport Garoua overcame a one goal first leg deficit against Sundowns of South Africa by winning 2-0 through goals from Hamadou Soussia late in the first half and Nassouroi with 10 minutes left.

Defeat completed a dismal season for the Pretoria club, who finished 10th in the 16-club national championship and made little impact in the South African League Cup and Cup competitions.

Zambian army outfit Buffaloes were virtually assured of a last eight place after the five goal first leg hiding they inflicted on Saint Michel United of Seychelles.

But after falling behind to a fifth-minute Philip Zialor goal, Buffaloes hit back to win 2-1 on the Indian Ocean island through first half goals from Maybin Nyosa and Chris Katongo, his fifth of the competition.

Rhinos were another military club to progress, winning 2-0 in Harare against Kiyovu Sport of Rwanda as goals from Lazarus Muhoni and Robson Chisango wiped out a one goal first leg loss.

Poor finishing let down the visitors, whose excellent build-ups carved large gaps in the Zimbabwean defence only for the final pass to go astray before a subdued crowd.

Kiyovu substitute Edouard Mugisha, scorer of the only goal in Kigali, had an afternoon he will wish to forget. Coming on as a substitute, he was cautioned within four minutes for hand ball and a similar offence led to a red card.

The CAF Cup quarterfinals will be staged over the weekends of September 5-7 and 19-21, the semifinals between October 3-5 and 17-19, and the two-leg final is scheduled for November 7-9 and 21-23. - Sapa-AFP
