Afranie fires back at Olympics management

Accra, Nov. 3, GNA - Deposed Accra Great Olympics Coach, Emmanuel Kwesi Afranie, has fired back at the management of his former club describing his sack as not being a collective decision of the entire management team "but that of a few individuals and their cohorts who want to pursue their personal hidden agenda."

"I believe the decision is not a collective decision of the entire management team, because I know for a fact that there is division amongst them", Afranie popularly known as coach- hene, told the GNA Sports in Accra on Monday.

Afranie was sacked on Friday afternoon, two days before Olympics' crunch match against league leaders, Asante Kotoko, on grounds of incompetence. But the coach said he was baffled by the derogative remark of incompetence, which he considered as an indictment on his hard-earned reputation.

The coach said he has had cordial working relations with Olympics management and had expected that at least, management would have invited him for discussions before taking their final decision.

Management said reports they received on last Wednesday match against Bofoakwa revealed that the coach asked every member of the team to make his own selection for the match and when some senior players failed to comply, because they did not understand the rationale behind the order, Afranie refused to use them in the match.

But the coach said this has been his style saying, he had on many occasions asked some management members and the skipper to make inputs in the selection of the team for some crucial matches.

He emphasized though that the final decision of determining who qualifies to play, rested with him.

The Coach- hene reckoned however that it was the first time he had asked the entire squad of Olympics to come out with their proposed best 11 for a match.

He cited a similar instance when he had to involve the entire team at the World Youth Tournament at Argentina in 2001 in their quarter final match against Brazil, which Ghana scale over and later won silver at the competition losing to host Argentina.

Afranie believes by so doing, each player feels part of the decision-making process "although I take the final decision". Olympics are perched on lowly 10th position in the 16-club league with just 28 points.

He said coaching is only an aspect of team building, which rests on other factors such as motivation, quality player recruitment, ability of management to solve problems and good support base for the team among others.

Afranie who was also accused of alighting on their way back from Sunyani, said he got down at Kumasi to visit his sick daughter at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

"In any case I was able to get back to Accra the following day for training", he said. Olympics officials say Afranie who is an employee of the Ministry of Youth and Sports announced on assuming office that he was on national service with the club but the Olympics management denied this and said he was on a full contract.

But Afranie also denied this and explained that it was a gentleman's agreement with Olympics since he was going to use his personal car the club needed to provid fuel and other allowances to keep him mobile.

Coach Afranie said Olympics couldn't solve their problems by hiring and firing of coaches but rather by making sound investment especially in player recruitments with emphasis on potent strikers. He said Olympics play one of the finest soccer on the local scene but lacked the men to score the goals, a problem he has been working on for all this while.

Afranie urged the management to be wary of player commitment, which he thinks is having an adverse effect on the team's performance.
