Abedi Pele Joins CAF Player Status Committee

Ghanaian Super Star, Abedi Ayew Pele, has been appointed a member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player Status Committee. He is also a member of FIFA's player status committee.

At a recent FIFA meeting, Abedi participated in discussions concerning the transfer of juvenile players from Africa to Europe. He is reported to have made positive contributions at the meeting. Abedi's latest CAF appointment has raised fresh questions on why the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has failed to co-opt him into football administration when he has repeatedly indicated his preparedness to serve his country in any capacity in the field of sports. Judging from his countenance, Abedi is even willing to wear the Black Stars jersey again. But the problem is that noone has approached him.

With his cult support throughout the country Abedi's involvement in sports administration holds something good for the country. But there are some sworn enemies of the maestro who would like him to be sidelined for his so called involvement in captaincy brawls with Akwasi Appiah and Tony Yeboah. Some critics even say he influenced the various coaches that handled the Black Stars during his captaincy to select his favourites into the starting line up. It may be true or not, but Abedi is one footballer who has done a lot for this country, and deserves a better deal.

Given his impressive record on the African and World football scene, the GFA cannot afford to ignore him.Wherever he goes questions like; 'why are you not playing for the Black Stars, why are you not coaching the Black Stars, and why are you not included in the GFA?', will continue to haunt sports authorities in the country.

Instead of involving dedicated past footballers in football administration, the GFA has been taken over by football power-hawks who have never kicked a ball in their lifetime. All they are doing is kicking each other's feet, while the quality of the game drops by the day. The 'pull him down' (PhD) attitude that currently reigns at the GFA is the immediate cause of the 3-1 humiliation of the Black Stars by Liberia. Its like nobody wants another person to be credited with qualifying Ghana for the first time to the World Cup. The hounding of Alhaji Nurudeen Jawula and his eventual decision not to contest the GFA chairmanship is one sad event. The man has a lot of goodwill with the CAF and his record in Ghana is unblemished. So long as this attitude permeates the running of the GFA and for that matter soccer administration in Ghana, we might as well forget about the World Cup dream all together.
