Finally, a member of the white man's religion has spoken some sense on this noise-making topic. Why did it take so long for the powerful holy spirit to reveal to him that noise-making is a health hazard to humans? Something which even "non believers" know through basic common sense.
I'm even surprised that almost all the comments made in this forum agrees with the Pentecostal pastor. If it were to be an ordinary person or an African traditional religious person, who is not a member of the white man's religion, complained about noise-making all sorts of insults will dominate the comments.

Who would care about skin colour in relation to words of logic and wisdom, if not for an inferiority complex?
While that's understandable for me, after all the abuse "the blacks" have had to suffer from "the whites" and "the arabs" etc. (even though such generalisations are also neglecting the truth), I would still choose to recognise if someone in my perception spoke the truth, totally regardless of the person's skin colour or other outward characteristics.
All such generalisations and classifications (e.g. "Jerusalem" = "black or white") are baseless racism (i.e. "racial" discrimination), which has no foundation in pure logic and science. Some so-called "scientists" have tried to abuse logic and science to purport alleged objective differences between self-postulated "races", but have not been able to prove any "racially" inherent differences that could not be attributed to educational or socioeconomical or epigenetical influences and geographical setting upon groups of humans (see e.g. Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel").
The Black and White worldview of egoistical oversimplification and inability to differentiate graduations and finer nuances of truth is what foments most conflicts.

On a recent visit to Ghana I noticed that every segment to the society operated at very high decibel levels. From households with their loud radios to the taxis/public transports playing religious songs loudly, market women screaming at the top of their voices with background religious songs to drinking bars with loud music. The whole society is chaotic in the midst of all the high noise level. This is endangering the health of everyday folks without them paying any attention to it. NOISE POLLUTION SHOULD BE A CRIME PUNISHABLE BY A FINE. The whole country appears to be LAWLESS & FILTHY. IF CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS, THEN THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS REALLY OFF COURSE.

We honour you for this timely advice and hope other church leaders will hear. Some churches instead of attracting people to their fold by behaving and respecting the rights of others rather violate such rights in the name of worshipping God. You cannot worship God through injustice, intolerance and being disrespectful of others. It makes a mockery of Christianity. You do not have to put loud speakers on roof tops to preach to your congregation sitting across of you it makes no sense at all. Our City Councils are not up to their responsibilities in enforcing the laws regarding noise making in our communities in fact visitors to our country wonder if we have laws at all, with the indiscipline being displayed in the country and even in our churches, why should we not sound proof churches and night clubs. I hope our leaders will heed your good advice.

I couldn't sleep well last night because of all night shouting by ignorant people calling themselves Christians. These people shouted all night till 5:30am, Beloveds, Ghana/Africa is under attack by a plague called: "FOREIGN ARCHIAC RELIGIOUS DOGMA", where the image of god (WHITE JESUS,) doesn't look like the people who worships IT, nor does it represent the culture of the people worshiping IT.
Terrorism comes in different forms, Christian churches have been given a mandate to terrorize the nation, using a subtle military tactic called sleep deprivation, I am experiencing it right now, if this nonsense continues, my life as well as others in this Nation, would be cut short by quite a few years.
China, my beloved China, has just bulldozed a Christian church because the European bibles makes no mention China or anything Chinese, therefore, it is virtually meaningless to China and the Chinese people. China, in a few months, will be the world's largest economic power.
Africa, the world's richest continent, led by the most backward political leaders, the poorest and most praying people, led by the the most ignorant AKPETESHIE & CONDOM pastors in the history of humankind.
Africa today, is the laughing stock of the world, it's leaders are mere managers of imperialism, which dictates both domestic and foreign policy to them via neocolonialism. 2013, NPP named a new roadway in Ghana after war mongering George Bush, reason? He gave us Money; 2014, NDC about to retrench workers, reason? IMF will lend us money. UGHHHH, ARGHHH & URGHHHHH!!!!.

While there's a lot of truth in your comment, I strongly suspect that the "watch night" phenomenon is a traditional Ghanaian trait.
While Watch-Night services have been held in different ('US'-) American churches since at least the 17th century, they were usually restricted to Christmas or New Years Eve.
Differingly from that, traditional "pagan" Ghanaian customs include drumming, singing and dancing late at night, as I can hear the drums and chanting here at my rural abode every week (but they don't use large speakers and generators).
So, the Pentecostal Churches and many other churches of Ghana have most likely incorporated this ancient custom into their rites.

Well said,Apostle.I hope our members are listening to this all important advice. It seems to me our churches enjoy excessive noise in our services.High decibel speakers during service is pollution, and I wonder why we have all these huge speakers with their booming volume and no one seems to notice or care about. And sometimes we have infants and children in our midst and we don't seem to care about this or are just plain ignorant about the harm noise can to our ears.We then complain about hearing problems forgetting that we are the cause of it.The COP may be the biggest culprit when the subject is noise making especially in the churches and we need to wake up to this fact.I have complained about this to our electronic experts in our churches to no avail. Now that the Chairman himself has come out with this directive let us in our locals take heed to this and save our ears from "earmylitis",my own coined word. Thanks,Apostle Chairman.

Ghana will be neither lawless nor suffocating in a corset of over-regulation - it will find the correct balance.
The big speakers really show hypocrite behaviour, as they seem to say: "Look, everyone, how "Christian/Muslim/righteous etc. I am", while Jesus CHRIST taught to pray privately, and not outwardly solely to get the acknowledgement or admiration of one's peers.

That , however, gives me the added opportunity to make a distinction between celebrating and praising, which are appropriate in public for believers IMO, and private praying on the other hand, but the all-nightly speakers in many Ghanaian are many times just 'over the top'.
Many attendants, often especially women, are regularily just too tired for any activity during the next day after their frequent "Watch Nights".

True, this Ghanaian forum is often astoundingly full of insultative commentary.
That is quite typical of the internet, where seeming anonymity, incognito appearance and pseudonyms give many humans a false perception of bravery, which we often wouldn't be able to muster face to face.
Sometimes I also would wish many commenters would abstain from insults, e.g. virtually shouting at politicians, adherents of other parties, confessions, religions or members of other tribes, ethnicities, age-groups, sexual orientations and nations. I would wish they would try more to see the situations from their perceived "enemies" perspectives, as well.
BTW, who are you calling "intellectuals" in a rather contemptuous way meant to insult, with raised voice ("What a shame!!!")?
I for myself am a simple worker and farmer, who happens to have acquired some english language capacities via self-education.
Isn't your comment of the same kind as those you are blaming? You are also pointing an excited finger with exclamation marks at those you deem "intellectuals" (whatever that is), (perhaps such as "Chairman Mao" tried to eradicate, i.e. let kill, all "anti-communist intellectuals" and "scholars").
While I can understand you probably mean unruly criticism of church-elders and so on, this development of giant speakers atop church-buildings trying to cover whole villages and areas with noise, the same as information centers and amplified calls of imams etc., is a rather recent phenomenon, and most traditional leaders (e.g. chiefs, organizers, assembly persons, elders etc.) I personally know of don't seem to be happy about it. For example, the chief of my village has forbidden the information centers from broadcasting at full volume and at any time and restricted them to certain dates and times.
Did you know that those who have real intellectual capacities usually sooner or later learn to respect elders and traditions in a more profound way through the ceaseless study of history, philosophy, theology, sociology and otherb arts and sciences than most uneducated persons are able to? That is because they gain respect for the deeds of humanities ancestors and know the true meaning of the saying "to be standing on the shoulders of giants".
The churches', "information systems'", and other institutions' glaring and nearly ceaseless noise-making also give a very bad example to the youths, who are often lead to think by this, that it also were allowed to them to listen to loud music continuously privately, so that every one of their neighbours is forced to listen to their abrantee-assem from morning to late at night.
They are thinking: "If the churches and discos and spots and all others are doing it, then our private
Dolby-surround-speakers only add to the mix and won't attract attention."
So this NEW custom of privately mounting glaring speakers on poles is a worrying development, criticising which has nothing to do with respect for elders and traditions.

Deacon, you have taken words from my mouth! I have been to quite a few events in the COP and always feel sad for the poor children in the congregation who have to bear the 'torture'. What is even worrying is the fact that the parents themselves do not seem to understand what they are doing to their children!.Yes, these days some Churches have sessions for children but even there, the sound pollution is quite worrying. The psychology of music and its effects on the human mind is a well-researched area in musicology. The music produces an effect on the human brain and that often sends people into a swoon! Sometimes this is interpreted as the working of the Spirit but only the Good Lord knows the truth! In African Religiosity, this is very common. Look at our Akomfo, the drumming and singing and the dancing and the trance. As many have expressed here, we hope that this sound advice would be heeded first by the COP Congregations themselves to serve as a good example to others. May the Good Lord Bless the Apostle and continue to make use of him for the Church, Ghana and the world at large. Amen

My "black men" neighbours were among the first to complain when a bunch of Ghanaian rich youths entered tenancy in our house shared between four families, and started filling the compound non-stop with their music from huge speakers from morning to evening (to late at night), such as they had learned from the churches, information centers, discos etc. as "normal".
They thought it was normal from such an affirmative environment and probably also thought "it's our culture" and "the neighbours are probably enjoying out music" and "if we like this music, everyone has to like the same."
But they rather quickly had to learn that was not the case, from their own "normal" Ghanaian neighbours.
I'm "white" and I had a loud party "or two" when I was a youth, and still at times enjoy loud music with bass beat and dancing, but not around the clock and with respect to my neighbours, so I'm not overdoing it.
I also don't mind traditonal drumming without over-amplification and the occasional funerary event, but the three-day long funerals with giant speakers are NOT traditional, as you might remember if you are of a certain age. (The same for storing the deceaseds' bodies in refrigerators for months on end). Such funerals were once reserved for the chiefs etc..
So, yes, many "white mens'" countries have become silent as graves - Ghana shouldn't follow that sad trend, but on the other hand also avoid the noise-trap, where you are never able to hear the birds singing anymore, which is NOT culturally traditional.

It is so appalling for anybody to equate noise nuisance with true worship. What has blaring of amplifiers in a neighbourhood got to do with worshipping God? What has babbling in tongues got to do with true worship? 1Cor 14:22 clearly states that tongues are not a sign for believers but for unbelievers. He then concluded the chapter that when one person speaks in tongues two or three persons must interpret. Why is the mushroom street corner, Twi speaking churches not following this plain biblical counsel. Apostle Opoku Onyinah must practise what he is preaching.

I'm here for sociological studies, that's why I comment here to such an extent as a pastime today.
I also sympathise with many comments (or at least parts thereof) here, as well as with the Ghanaians and humanity in general.
That's why it's apt to make me additionally sad to see so many here "conversing" in capitals (i.e. with BIG LETTERS), which is quite rude in printed media, as that usually means to drown out so-called opposition with higher volume.
It conventionally shows the intention of shouting down others.
Or at least the idea, that ones own comment is so much more important than other ones' that it has to be printed bigger than the other comments.
That is quite related to the topic of this article, as the ones complaining about church noise are often shouting themselves.
After years of spiritual thinking and being led by the Holy Spirit himself to disturb public peace with impunity, a breath of fresh air and common sense finally prevails in the Pentecostal church of Ghana.
I hope the Reve ...
