You have left your country which is using the art of following your fourth point to a country which is using your first three points on those who have successfully used the art of following. What you did not realize is that those countries followed the right things and not the wrong thing you are trying to portray in item 4.

BoHoBio, Am not sure you understood this article. The author is simply is saying that you have to choose who you want to be like and follow what the person is doing. You are most likely following so many people, trends, etc in your life by your choice and I think that is what this is all about.
Even when you want to innovate you try to understatnd the current and then you innovate. Those who normally want to suddenly come out with sometime spectacular that has never been seen before ever normally fail.
You start our with the familiar, then innovate. That is what the Eastern countries have done.
