Red Cross Society spearheads clean up at Aflao

Aflao, Dec. 18, GNA - Members of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) in Aflao at the weekend undertook a massive clean-up exercise at Sepenukope, a coastal suburb of Aflao.

The exercise was against the backdrop of worsening sanitation in the Aflao Township, which local health authorities attribute to the high incidence of typhoid fever and an annual outbreak of cholera in the area. During the five-hour exercise, the about 60 GRCS members who were joined by residents swept and burned rubbish at the beach and along pathways.

Mr Nutsugah, District GRCS Organizer told the residents that prevention of communicable diseases through cleanliness was their own responsibility.

He said the GRCS decided to undertake the exercise because it thought that tackling sanitation was incidental to its core responsibilities.

Mr Nutsugah said defecating at the beach posed a great danger to all inhabitants since that place also served as a fish market. He said in the coming weeks the GRCS would undertake similar exercises at the lorry stations and markets in the town. Mr Godwin Tay, Assembly Member of the area said one major headache with regards to ensuring good sanitation in the area was the lukewarm attitude of people. Mr Kodzo Sepenu, an Elder of the suburb said the exercise had enlightened the people and would inspire them to keep their homes and surroundings clean at all times.
