Review Bawku Township road construction plans – Youth

The Youth of Bawku Municipality and its environs has called on the government to review the Bawku Township road construction plan in the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulmakom road contract.

In a petition signed by Mr Seidu Atiraag Issah, Speaker of the Bawku Youth Parliament and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the youth said they had detected a gap in the construction of the road especially roads within the Bawku Municipality as against what was promised.

The petition stated that the leadership of the youth had engagement with the leadership of the construction company, Queiroz Galvao, now QGMI and realized that less than 30 per cent of work had been done on the 109 kilometres of road.

It said “On job description, Mr Peter Dagadu, Resident Engineer of the Project, explained that the 109km road had been divided into 14 lots, out of which three lots are bridges, the Kolaa bridge, Red Volta bridge and the White Volta bridge”.

“Two kilometres from Bolgatanga Township will be a dual carriageway, there will be by-passes in Bawku and Pusiga Township and the rest of the roads will be double surface dressing and single carriageway”.

It indicated that only three kilometres of the entire roads would be asphalted, that is, two kilometres in Bolgatanga and one kilometer in Zebilla, while Bawku would not get a dual carriageway and asphalt.

The youth expressed dissatisfaction with the plan of the project particularly how roads within the Bawku Township would be constructed and demanded immediate review of the plan to ensure roads constructed in the area befitted the status of a Municipality.

Whilst commending government for making efforts to source for funding to complete the project, the youth asked that “10km of the Bawku Township roads be dual carriageway, 20km of Bawku Township roads be asphalted, 20km of Bawku Township roads be given facelift, the by-pass in the existing contract be asphalted and facilities such as load station, traffic and street lights, tricycle station be included in the existing contract”.

The youth said the Bawku Municipality was the first to attain Municipality status in the area but had since been neglected by successive governments with regards to good roads and urged government to meet their demand, adding “asphalted roads in the municipality will last longer than what is stipulated in the current contract”.

“Please, review the Bawku Township roads construction now, this is our petition,” the youth said.
