Rainstorm hits three communities

Nkoranza (B/A), April 17, GNA - A school building collapsed displacing more than 200 students when a rainstorm hit three farming communities in the Nkoranza District.

The communities are Makyinnabre, Dandwa and Akropong. Mr. Ronald Azapa, Assemblyman for the Nsugum-Makyinnabre Electoral area told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza that the three-classroom block of the local JSS collapsed, adding that, roofing boards and sheets were also destroyed.

He said the communities were finding it difficult to get a place for the students as the rains had started and classes could not be organised under trees.

The Assemblyman said the people initiated the JSS project some years ago but lack of funds made it impossible for them to rehabilitate the building.

He appealed to the Nkoranza District Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the District Assembly for assistance.

Mr. George Franklin Effah, Assemblyman of Dandwa-Akropong Electoral Area complained that the three-classroom block of the Dandwa Local Primary School was also affected. He said part of the roofing of the Presbyterian Mission House at Akropong were ripped of and destroyed and called for assistance for the rehabilitation of the buildings.

Meanwhile, the District Director of Education, Mr. Kwabena Agyemang Badu has visited the affected schools to assess the extent of damage. 17 April 05
