We will turn Asuogyaman into an NPP stronghold – Paul Ansah asserts

Former Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Paul Asare Ansah is fourth time lucky in his bid to represent the New Patriotic Party in the Asuogyaman constituency in grand style against none other than the man who beat him in the 2015 primaries, Kwame Adu Darkwa.

Paul Asare Ansah polled a resounding 539 votes to beat Kwame Adu Darkwa who polled 131 votes in the Asuogyaman Constituency Parliamentary Primaries of the New Patriotic Party after the delegates conference held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Apeguso in the Eastern Region.

The new parliamentary aspirant who described his victory as the will of God in showing magnanimity in victory attributed his triumph not to his efforts alone but the hard work of delegates, council of patrons and elders and the entire Asuogyaman constituency.

The more crucial part of the campaign, he added is next year’s general elections, a process he is confident of winning to deliver the parliamentary seat to the incumbent NPP and subsequently turn the Asuogyaman constituency into an NPP stronghold, in terms of both presidential and parliamentary fortunes.

“This victory is not only for Paul Ansah, it is a victory for Asuogyaman NPP and the focus is to turn this constituency into a formidable NPP stronghold,” said Mr. Ansah to an enthusiastic crowd of charged party faithful in his house after the elections.

He was confident that Saturday’s victory was the beginning of the road to annexing the 2020 general elections for the New Patriotic Party.

“The first victory has been won. What is left now is the second contest which is the general elections. We have won the primaries and we shall win the general elections as well. We shall win the seat for you and use the face of President Akuffo Addo to win the presidential elections,” he asserted.

He cautioned his supporters against mocking his contender and his supporters since they all belonged to the same political party, adding that all hands are needed on board for an NPP grand victory in the 2020 general elections. The NPP held a nation-wide primaries for its ‘orphan constituencies’ as part of the process to win those seats in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

Paul Asare Ansah is set for a fierce duel in the 2020 general elections with incumbent member of parliament for the area, Thomas Ampem Nyarko who earlier this year retained his parliamentary candidacy on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress after a convincing win.

The victory means, Mr. Ansah has cleared the first hurdle of his dream to become a member of Ghana’s legislature.

His victory was greeted with rapturous cheers from teeming supporters. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted parliamentary primaries in 100 constituencies out of 106 orphan constituencies on Saturday as part of preparations for the 2020 general elections.

These are areas where the party lost the 2016 Parliamentary Elections to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and therefore has no sitting Members of Parliament on the party’s side in Parliament. The NPP has I69 seats out of the total 275 seats in Parliament.

Saturday’s constituency extraordinary delegates conferences would be taking place simultaneously in all 100 constituencies are therefore part of the steps the NPP is taking to win some of those seats in the 2020 general elections.

The party will at a later date organise parliamentary primaries in the 169 constituencies where it already has sitting MPs.
