Accra Technical University to launch 70th anniversary

The Accra Technical University (ATU) will launch its 70th anniversary celebrations on Tuesday, April 30 in Accra.

The theme for the celebration would be, “70 Years of Innovative Education, A Path towards Excellence’’.

Professor Edmund Ameko, the interim Vice-Chancellor ATU, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, ahead of the launch said the anniversary celebrations would not only focus on the achievements of the university but also an opportunity to take stock and reposition to be ahead of the curve.

He stressed that the University would continue to execute its mandate of training highly skilled human resource for the job market and also building the capacities of personnel who were already on the field.

As part of efforts to augment existing facilities, Prof Ameko disclosed that five new facilities would be inaugurated during the celebration.

The facilities are a 32-room ATU Hotel, a 92-office complex for lecturers, an ICT block and Amatrol Laboratory, and a 60-room multipurpose block.

He explained that the facilities would help meet the needs of staff, faculty and students alike and lessen the stress on current facilities. Throwing more light on the activities, Madam Fausta Ganaa, the Head of Public Affairs of ATU said the university had scheduled a full slate of events, which would include exhibitions, alumni lectures and a research conference, health walk and health screening.

Other activities comprise of an anniversary float, clean-up campaign and donations, inauguration of Retired Staff Association, fundraising events, and climax in December with a grand durbar, skills competition, awards and gala night.

The Accra Technical University was the first Technical University to be established and it currently, offers degree (BTech), Higher National Diploma (HND), Diploma and Professional certificate programmes.

It was established in 1949 as a Technical School and commissioned in 1957 as Accra Technical Institute but had gone through a transformation over the years and had been converted into a Technical University by virtue of the Technical University Act 2016 (Act 922).
