Residents of Janjori-kukuo in the Nanton District of the Northern Region have been sensitized on the functions of the local government system and how they can take advantage of them to demand accountability from duty-bearers.

They were also taught about the processes to follow to demand accountability from local authorities and the need for them to actively participate in the local governance process to ensure that plans and policies implemented reflected their views to promote sustainable development.

These formed parts of a social auditing engagement held at Janjori-kukuo by the Nanton District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to promote community ownership of development projects and policies.

The engagement, which was also to increase awareness of the citizenry on the operations of the Assembly as well as empower them to demand accountability from authorities, brought together duty-bearers, identifiable groups, traditional authorities, and youth groups.

It followed the successful conduct of district-wide sensitization activities on the Accountability, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (ARAP), sponsored by the European Union, to deepen the knowledge of the citizenry on corruption and accountability.

Social auditing is about involving all groups of citizens in the decision-making process to promote community ownership of projects and programmes.

Mr Ibrahim Alhassan, Assembly Member for the Janjori-kukuo Electoral Area urged the people to join him in efforts to demand accountability from authorities of the Assembly to address their concerns.

Mr Ibrahim Iddrisu, Nanton District Director of NCCE advised the people not to take the law into their own hands in demanding accountability but to follow the laid down procedures to ensure that their concerns were addressed.
