Scholarship scheme for Bobikuma School launched

Accra, Sept. 3, GNA - John Eduful Kobina Foundation (JEKFED), an Educational Development Foundation, devoted to providing scholarships to pupils in the basic schools on Friday presented a cheque for 2,150,000 cedis for 55 pupils in the Agona Bobikuma District Assembly Junior Secondary School in the Central region.

The cheque was presented at the launch of the Foundation in Accra. The Foundation was founded in 2000 by Mr John Eduful Kobina, a Ghanaian businessman based in the USA.

Mr Eduful, President of JEFKED, said it was founded from the existing companies of Eduful family, which included Jek's electrical, Jek's barbering and communication centre, Jek's art service, Jeks tae kwon-do and transport based in the US.

Dr Kwesi Agyeman, a lecturer at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Ghana, who launched the Foundation, said education, was a way of designing and engineering the mind to be morally disciplined, productive and responsible.

He said government was an instrument to assist in the provision of infrastructure and other educational facilities but the responsibility rested on parents to provide the necessary inputs to enable the children to rise to the highest level on the educational ladder.

Mrs Victoria Donkor, Deputy Director for Basic Education expressed the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports' appreciation of JEKFED's initiative and promised to support the foundation.

Mr Baffour Kwaku Oteng, Vice President of the Foundation urged pupils to eschew indiscipline and violent behaviour so that society could count on them.

He said the Foundation was ready to provide scholarship to ten pupils of basic schools in the Greater Accra Region and called on the Ministry to do the selection.

Mr Emmanuel Agbigbi, Headteacher, who also received some sports equipment to promote sporting activities in the school thanked JEFKED and promised to work hard with the teachers and pupils to raise the level of education in the school.

Some of the school children present at the ceremony were also presented with an exercise book each in addition to pencils and pens. 3 Sept 04
