Residents of Kibi in the Eastern region have turned portions of the Birim River where raw water is pumped for treatment, into a recreational center.

The situation has worsened the already high turbidity of raw water supplied to the Water Treatment plant.

The Kibi water treatment plant has been undergoing intermittent shut down due to excessive pollution which makes the water untreatable.

Already, cost of water treatment is high due to the quantity of chemicals required to treat raw water.

Government’s clamp down on illegal mining which is the main source of pollution has helped to minimize the level of pollution though below expectation.

The fear is that, the water treatment plant may be shut down again as water pumping station is now being used for recreation by the residents.

The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Water Company limited, Kwadwo Daase, shocked by the development told Starr News that the company has not approved any recreational activity around the water pumping station.

He said the GWCL will do its best to stop the practice due to its negative effect on raw water quality.
