The Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Peter Ayimbisa, has been elected as the Upper East Regional Representative of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) at the regional delegates’ conference held in Bolgatanga on Friday.

He polled 33 votes to beat his contestant, Mr Richard Ajuik, the Presiding Member of the Builsa South District who got 31 votes.

Whilst commending the electorate, drawn from all the thirteen Municipal and District Assemblies in the Region for reposing confidence in him, the Regional NALAG representative elect, pledged to work hard to improve upon the working and living conditions of Assembly members and Presiding Members as well as advocate for development of the various Assemblies in the Region.

He however appealed to members to support him in his administration so as to help fast-track development.

Mr Rockson Bukari, the Upper East Regional Minister, in a speech read on his behalf by Alhaji Mohammed Azonko, the Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council, urged the District Chief Executives and other members of NALAG to bury their differences and unite to help propel the development of the area.

The General Secretary of NALAG, Mr Kokro Amankwah, impressed upon the Municipal and District Assemblies to mainstream into their Medium Term Development Plans, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Climate Change mitigation.

The General Secretary told the Assemblies that the localization of the SDGs would help contribute to the achievement of over 65 per cent of the goals of the SDGs particularly in the areas of hunger, poverty and education.

He said the European countries including other development partners were prepared to help those Assemblies that would want to implement programmes towards achieving the SDGs and Climate Change.

The National President of NALAG, Mr Felix Mensah Nii Annan, said the National Secretariat had contributed a lot by empowering most of the Assemblies to improve upon sanitation, communication between the Secretariat and stakeholders as well as developed a website for them.

He gave the assurance that the Secretariat would continue to initiate moves to improve upon the general wellbeing of Assembly members and also initiate more programmes geared towards the development of the Assemblies
