The Western Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for some irate residents of Ekpu community near Half Assini in the Jomoro District for causing damage to state property.

The miscreants in their numbers overpowered police officers on duty at the time of the incident and vandalized several properties of the security agency in the district running into several thousands of Ghana cedis.

The heavily built men took the laws into their hands to cause mayhem upon unconfirmed information that one of their own who was under investigation for alleged criminal offence had died in police cell.

Reports say an intervention of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Paul Essien to stop the aggrieved residents after the destruction of a police vehicle and some furniture at the charge office yielded no results.

The regional police command revealed that they have identified the Assembly man of the area, one Peter Meiziah Angate as leader of suspects currently said to have fled the town

The Assembly man who has since justified their action, explained on a local radio station explains that the deceased was under investigation for stealing but was refused bail on countless occasions when his relations applied for it.

Meanwhile, the police hierarchy has appealed to the public to volunteer information which could lead to the arrest and prosecution of the suspects.
