Parliament urged to review of District Assembly - Chief

Gomoa Gyaman (C/R), Jan 26, GNA - The Chief of Gomoa Gyaman, Nana Son Kaba Kum VI, has appealed to Parliament to review the District Assemblies law.

He was speaking at durbar to climax the Annual Akwambo Festival of the Chiefs and the people of Gomoa Gyaman, in the Central Region. Nana Kum said instead of going between the government and the public and facilitating local development, some Assembly Members had turned themselves into judges and lawyers trying marriage, land, chieftaincy disputes and land guard disputes.

Known in private life as Mr Kweku Donkoh, Head of Akan Department of the Good News FM station in Takoradi, Nana Kum said some Assembly Members drew sitting allowances when they had not attended Assembly meetings and awarded contracts to themselves and their relatives. He said some Assembly Members also threatened District Chief Executives with vote of no confidence to remove them from office for failing to give them contracts.

Nana Kum noted that District Assemblies were not initiated for the personal gains of Assembly Members.

He commended the government for maintaining real Freedom and Justice and said, "There has been no arrest, harassment, intimidation and unlawful detention since the NPP government came to power" and commended the government for ensuring the good governance the NPP promised the people in the 2000 elections.

The Chief appealed to the government to continue promoting the rights and freedom of the people to ensure peace and stability in the country.
