Ensure consistency in teaching of English and Maths in ICCES

Kumasi, Jan. 14, GNA- An appeal has been made to the Ministry of Manpower Development and Employment to impress upon the directorate of Integrated Community Centres for Employable Skills (ICCES) the need for consistency in the teaching of English and Mathematics in the centres in Ashanti.

Nana Anthony Boateng, Ashanti Regional ICCES Co-ordinator, said the two subjects, were being taught by the National Service Personnel of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and foreign volunteers. "These people leave us in midstream at the end of their service, thus creating vacuum in the two subjects.

"We can no longer depend on this piecemeal teaching of these two very important subjects by national service personnel and foreign volunteers", he said.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi on Tuesday, Nana Boateng said the situation was impeding efficient teaching and learning of the two subjects and was also making it difficult for most of the centres to complete their syllabus within the stipulated time.

"I have personally written several letters to the ICCES directorate without any improvement. I therefore hope that the ministry will intervene in realisation of the purpose for which the programme was instituted".

Nana Boateng said currently, the centres in the region had a complement of only 20 percent of English and Mathematics tutors some of who were forced to stay on.

While commending the government for introducing the ICCES concept, he called on the district assemblies and the communities to assist the centres both in cash and in kind for their continued running. He said programme had turned out about 14,800 youth in the country, since its inception.
