B/A REGSEC orders investigations into Prang disturbances

The Brong Ahafo Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has asked the police to conduct full-scale investigations into the disturbances at Prang on November 22 and submit a report to the appropriate authority for further action.

In a statement to the press signed by its Chairman, Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Regional Minister, the Council also asked Nana Kwadwo Nyarko 111, Omanhene of Prang to give a statement to the police considering his involvement in the disturbances.

REGSEC took the decisions at its meeting on Tuesday, November 25. The statement explained that when the Council invited the Omanhene to the meeting to find out his reaction to the violent demonstration by his people, the chief said what the people did was in the interest of Prang and admitted that he gave his full support for the action.

The Council also decided that the damage caused by the demonstrators to property would be assessed and their value surcharged to the Omanhene and his people to pay.

The REGSEC noted that following the publication on November 20 about the creation of new districts and the location of their headquarters, the chiefs and people of Prang unhappy that Yeji had been made capital of the Pru District instead of Prang took to the main street of the town and demonstrated against the decision.

In the course of the demonstration, they blocked the highway and succeeded in preventing vehicles from Yeji and Atebubu to move out of Prang.

They vandalised the police station at Prang, beat and injured a policeman and seized his rifle, burnt a taxi belonging to another policeman, damaged a car parked at the police station and broke the windscreens of vehicles used by the security personnel sent to the town to restore order, the statement added. The REGSEC said more policemen and some soldiers were sent to the town before the roadblocks were removed for vehicular movement to resume.
