Progressive Free SHS not for all Students - Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Basic and Secondary Education Alex Kyeremeh, has revealed that government’s progressive free Senior High School (SHS) is not meant for students of all second cycle schools in the country.

He disclosed that the first phase of the project which will be rolled out next month is targeted at 120,000 students across the country and those particularly from deprived communities are to benefit.

“Soon we will come out with the modalities for the selection of these beneficiaries and I am sure Kwame, you will get to know”, he told host of Abusua Nkomo.

According to him, the rest who are not rolled onto this programme qualify to benefit from similar policies being implemented by government with donor support all aimed at making education equitable, accessible and of quality.

The Deputy Minister maintained that government will take care of all fees except those imposed by parents under the various Parents Teacher Associations (PTA). He explained that these are levies imposed by parents themselves and agreed to by all and therefore government has little to do with such fees.

Meanwhile, he stated that parents will be required to provide uniforms and start-up school materials for first year students and subsequently government will take over.
