District level elections in six districts scheduled for December 16

Accra, Oct. 30, GNA - The Electoral Commission on Thursday said district level elections in six districts would take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2003.
The elections would be held in all the electoral areas of Tolon-Kumbungu, Savelungu-Nanton, Gushegu-Karaga and Zabzugu-Tatale, all in the Northern Region.
Those in the Aowin-Suaman District in the Western Region would be confined to Domeabra, Nana Bulu, Nyamebekyere and Karlo Electoral Areas and Yaw Parekrom, Kwasuokrom and Suiaboi Unit areas of Yaw Parekrom, Kwasuokrom and Toya Electoral Areas in that order.
That in the Manhyia Sub-Metro of Ashanti Region would be confined to Maakro Old Town Unit of Tarkwa Maakro Electoral Area.
This was contained in a press statement Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman for Electoral Commission, signed and issued on Thursday. The statement said: "Nomination of candidates shall take place at the Offices of the Returning Officers in the Districts concerned on Tuesday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 12, 2003 between 0800 hours and 12 hours and between 1400 hours and 1700 hours each day. It said all persons, who initially filed their nominations to contest the elections in the affected areas were to confirm their participation or otherwise.
"Each candidate shall be nominated on separate nomination form. Every nomination shall be proposed, seconded and supported by 18 and eight other registered voters for district and unit committee elections, respectively. The consent of the candidate shall be endorsed thereon." The statement said nomination forms may be obtained free of charge from the Office of the Returning Officer in the District concerned or the Office of the District Electoral Officer.
In addition, candidates are required to present two recent postcard-sized black and white photographs of themselves to the Returning Officers and advised that voting shall be taken at all electoral stations within the electoral areas and units at 0700 hours to 1700 hours on polling day.
The statement said all questions relating to the elections should be addressed to the Returning Officer, District Electoral Officer or Regional Director of the Commission.
