Support teachers to nurture talents

Mr Joshua Jones Opoku Marfo, Vice Principal of the Golden International School in Sunyani, has called on parents to provide the needed backing to teachers to help them identify and nurture the talents of their wards.

He expressed unhappiness with the practice where parents insisted their children pursue certain academic programmes without considering their learning abilities.

This, he said, tends to discourage and kill the interests and desire of many students to further their education.

He made the call at a career fair organized by the school as part of its 10th anniversary celebration.

Mr Marfo said the prejudices and denigration of some vocations and professions must stop saying “every profession must be recognized as important”.

“We should not look down on any profession, but we must endeavour to guide our children so that they can build and polish whatever talent God has bestowed on them.”

He said much as it is important for parents and teachers to collaborate to give direction to the youth, there is also the need for parents to also spend quality time with their children and to see to it that they were provided with their basic needs.

Mr Marfo urged the government to make the development of vocational and technical education, a major priority.

The school with a children population of about 300 has prioritized the teaching and learning of the French language.
