CBO organizes quiz competition on AIDS

Gomoa Obuasi (C/R), Aug. 14, GNA - The Gomoa Obuasi Women and Youth Development Association, a community based organization (CBO) engaged in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Gomoa District, on Wednesday organized a quiz competition for schools in the Obuasi township.

Ghana AIDS Commission sponsored the programme, which was to test the pupils on their level of knowledge on HIV/AIDS.

Alhaji Osman Moro Fukuyama, Gomoa District Co-ordinator of CBOs/NGOs who was the quizmaster, asked the contestants questions on the mode of infection, prevention and management of the disease. Two primary schools and two junior secondary schools competed. In the primary division, Presbyterian School scored 28 marks to take the first position while the District Assembly Primary School followed with 23 points.

In the JSS division, District Assembly B scored 27 marks to beat District Assembly A, which had 25 marks.

Mr Eric Akobeng, Gomoa District HIV/AIDS Focal Person commended the participants for a good performance.

He advised school children to study hard since good education is the surest means of getting out of the vicious poverty circle, which has been identified as one of the causes of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Mr Akobeng advised parents to stop persuading their children to go out to acquire wealth at the expense of their education. He also advised the children not to envy their friends who are from rich homes. Certificates of participation were presented to the contestants.
