Two bodies provide schools with ICT Lab

The Colonel Hassan Foundation, an NGO at Ekpu near Half Assini and Brigadier-General Musah Whajah, of the Ghana Armed Forces, and a citizen of the town, have jointly provided Information Communication Technology (ICT) Laboratory to Basic Schools in the town to enhance ICT education.

Brigadier Musah who made this known to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Ekpu said the two have also equipped the Centre with 10 Dell Table-Top Computers & Monitors, Two Ceiling Fans, and Air Conditioner tables and chairs, among others.

Brigadier Musah who did not give the estimated cost of the project and the items, said the gesture was to give the pupils access to ICT knowledge at their fundamental stages.

According to the Brigadier, children in rural areas lacked knowledge in ICT, which was now a subject in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

Brigadier Musah hoped the provision of the ICT Lab would go a long way to bridge the gap between pupils in the town and their urban counterparts in ICT examinations.

He urged the teachers to take proper care of the equipment for the benefit of the pupils.

Madam Monica Adulley, Headmistress of the Ekpu Catholic Basic School, where the Laboratory is located, conducted the GNA round to inspect the computers and other items.

She expressed her profound gratitude for the gesture, and said it would improve ICT Education at the school.

The headmistress appealed to the Ghana Education Service to post permanent ICT teachers to the school to man the Centre.

She indicated that the absence of a printer and a photocopier at the Centre was preventing them from reaping the full benefits of the Computer Laboratory.

The situation, she said, had compelled the schools to print their examination papers outside, and therefore, appealed to benevolent organizations, philanthropists, well-wishers and the District Assembly, for those items to enhance ICT education at the place.

Brigadier Musah was among some personalities honoured by the chiefs and people of the Western Nzema Traditional Area (WNTA) recently for promoting education in the area.

The occasion marked this year’s Kundum Festival of the chiefs and people of the traditional area.
